Ohio at UT Football

Football Time! Tennessee 28, Ohio 19

Hard to believe this is the third Vols game I’ve photographed this season and it was the first time UT has been home on a Saturday! Even with the early (noon) kickoff, it was awesome to get back to something close to a routine.

UT got off to a fast start, then things got interesting, but in the end they pulled off the win over a very determined Ohio team.

Since this is the first of two daytime games in a row, I decided it was time to give the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens a good workout, so I had the fine folks at LensRentals.com send me one. I wound up using it with my Canon 1.4x III extender on a 7D Mark II most of the day and I must say I was very well satisfied with the results…now I just need to convince everyone that ALL football should be played in the daytime! 🙂

Here’s a few of my favorites and thanks for stopping by!

Football Photographer MaxPrep’s Preseason Top 25

Football Photographer?

Football Photographer in April/May? Yep, that’s me 🙂 Excited to be able to share some of what I have been up to the past five weeks!

I’ve been photographing for MaxPreps for quite a while now, and they are still one of my favorite clients, so I was excited to have the opportunity to photograph four of the top twenty five high school football teams for them this year.

I started with three teams in the Ft. Lauderdale/Miami area. Just so happens there are some reasonably priced flights from here to there and my brother lives in the area, so logistically speaking things worked out well. Traveling with an entire outdoor studio setup was a bit of an issue, but thankfully between Think Tank Photo, Pelican Products, and some nifty Amazon Prime shopping I had everything I needed.

First up was #11 American Heritage in Plantation, FL. Gorgeous campus, great athletes and staff! (link to full gallery here)

Next was #16 Central in Miami, FL. Another awesome bunch of people, and you just have to love it anytime you get to use a rocket in your images, plus the clouds cooperated well! (link to full gallery here)

Last one for me in Florida was #1 St. Thomas Aquinas in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. As usual, great people, another amazing facility, and the clouds remained friendly to me here as well! (link to full gallery here)

I owe my brother Michael and some other friends a huge shout out for all the help assisting me in Florida, I could not have done it without you guys!

Finally got home for a few weeks and got my last school, #15 Central Catholic in Pittsburgh, PA scheduled for their shoot. (link to full gallery here) More great people, and the school is located downtown with some amazing architecture. Even with a lot of construction going on, you simply have to love the place, especially after you realize that this is where Dan Marino went to school! Michael Messing (super assistant and awesome photographer himself) came along on this trip and all the “Behind The Scenes” shots are his. (Thanks Mikey!)

Laying down on the job! With all the construction going on, finding clean backgrounds was a chore.

According to my exhaustive research on Google Earth prior to this trip, that is a simply gorgeous hillside behind us 🙂

Here’s the link for the for the entire Top 25 from MaxPrep’s, looks like there is going to be some amazing high school football played this year! Big thanks to MaxPreps and especially Todd Shurtleff (Director of Photography) for this great opportunity, let’s shoot for 8 teams next year! 🙂

For all the photography minded people out there, practically everything was shot with a Canon 5DIII and the 24-105mm lens. Lighting was all Paul C. Buff White Lightning 1600’s and/or Einsteins, normally a three light setup. All power came from the Vagabond Mini Lithiums. Used an Octabox on the main light in Pittsburgh, everything else used either standard or 8.5″ reflectors. And yes, it was too windy for me to set anything on fire 🙁

Scott Kelby, Remotes, UT Vols Football, and a Time Lapse

Last Saturday Photoshop Guru, Photographer, and All Around Great Guy Scott Kelby came to Knoxville to photograph the South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Tennessee Volunteers football game. I had saw where Scott had posted on his blog about the gear he was bringing and wanting to setup a remote on the goal post…cool stuff!

I’ve spent some time trying to devise a good way to setup a remote on the post and called UT Athletics Photographer Donald Page (he and Scott are friends) to let him know that I thought it was gonna be a pain in the you know what. Sure enough Donald calls me at 10PM the night before the game (noon kickoff the next day) and says, “Yeah, we got some issues here…”. 🙂

So I went to work and came up with this, which, well, looks like you know what. Sad part is I actually own the correct gear to do this with but it was about two hours away. (and as bad as it looks it worked quite well, and we had a gazillion safety cables on it).

The old "cut the superclamp in half and use huge hose clamps" trick.

A gazillion dollars worth of photography gear and we’re all taking crappy iPhone pictures, gotta love it….

So here’s my time lapse video…3 hours and 10 minutes real time, 2,274 frames. Runs from 10:30 am to 1:40 pm (end of first half).

So as usual I had a blast and learned quite a bit! Scott has a super cool blog post with lot’s more info and all the great images!

Thursday Update: Left out the fact that I actually photographed the game as well 🙂  Images via USA Today Sports Images are located here, thanks!

Kenysha Coulson, 4 Sport High School Athlete

Last week I had the chance to travel to Huntsville, AL to photograph an athlete for MaxPreps. A high school football kicker. Say what? Oh yeah, SHE also plays 3 other sports…

Not only is Kenysha an AMAZING athlete, both her and Mom Kristi are some of the nicest people around. We about wore Kenysha out, it was a long shoot and she had to change uniforms a gazillion times 🙂

Michael came down with me from Knoxville to assist me and he wound up shooting a bunch of video, which of course I just had to play with a little bit. We also met our long lost friend Tammy in Huntsville and she did an amazing job shuffling gear around for us.

Video comes first, followed by a few of my favorite images. You can read the story on MaxPreps here, and the full gallery is located here. Enjoy!

UT Football Media/Photo Day

Yesterday I had the chance to assist the UT Athletic Department and Staff Photographer Donald Page at the football team photo day. It was a bunch of fast paced work, but all in all everything went very well. I got tasked to photograph individual portraits of the players inside the locker room, and of course the players (for the most part) 🙂 and I had a blast!

Here’s the car all loaded up. Four 13′ lights stands, four AB-800’s, two White Lightning 1600’s,  reflectors, two strip boxes, two soft boxes, one large octabox, extension cords, generator, eight sandbags, two Vagabond mini lithiums, and I think the kitchen sink is in there somewhere…

Here’s the lighting setup inside the locker room…

Of course, the players were very relaxed and were being themselves, which led to quite a few interesting images 🙂

During a break, I got to sit with defensive lineman Isaac Mobley (75)  (who graduated from West High here in Knoxville) and we discussed a lot of local high school football, I was way impressed with his knowledge of the local football scene! So he gets a real image here 🙂

I normally just see these guys in their 110% all business/game day mode, so it was cool to see see them in a more relaxed atmosphere! I’m photographing at least eight of their games this season, so Go Vols!
